Executive Committee Meeting

The church moderator has called a special meeting of the executive committee after the worship service this Sunday. Members are asked to gather by the pulpit for a brief meeting.

Thank You to Volunteer Drivers

A special thank you is extended to Ian McKinnon, Zepheniah Otuki, and Herman & Vivian Barrett who volunteered to drive children and youth to and from Bayside Camp.

Seminar on Grief

Thank you for your helpful comments regarding the grief seminar I did with personal care workers this past Wednesday. You responded with both helpful comments, as well as other resource material. I was very grateful and was able to integrate your contributions into my presentation. Thank you again for your help and prayers.

Blessings, Ida.

Oasis Delegates

Please be in prayer for the delegates who will be representing our church at Oasis next week. The delegates are Herman & Vivian Barrett, Nancy Duffy, Miriam MacDonald, and Goldye Smith.

Edu-Kid

We have begun our annual Edu-Kid campaign to provide school supplies to those in need. We are looking for scissors, Kleenex and math sets.

There is a box in the foyer where you can drop off donated supplies or you can make a donation (mark as “school supplies”) and these funds will be used to meet special requests from our students. Thank you for your support!

Volunteers Needed

We are making plans for an exciting Fall Program for Hi/KidVenture. This program will be meeting on Monday nights from 6:30-8:00pm. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help out on Monday evenings in a variety of capacities. If you are interested in becoming a Hi/KidVenture volunteer or would like more information, please contact the church office @ 835-5966.

GiveToLive: Coast to Coast for Cancer

You're invited to celebrate with us in welcoming Cameron Starratt and friends Rob and Chris after their 6000+ kms cycle across Canada. They have raised $6000+ and have been on the road for 51 days.  The celebration will take place at Fish Hatchery Park in Bedford, Thursday, August 20th, 7-9pm.

Sunday Prayer Link

Please pray for all those who have leadership responsibilities with regards to this week’s Oasis ’09 (the Annual Assembly of our Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches), which takes place August 19th – 22nd. Please pray particularly for Rev. David Dubois, President of our Convention; Dr. Peter Reid, Executive Minister; Rev. Dale Stairs, Program Coordinator; and Mr. Daryl MacKenzie, Facilities Coordinator.

Acadia Divinity College in Metro: Fall 2009

Three Acadia Divinity College courses are now open for registration. Please see the pamphlet on the bulletin board in the foyer for more details.

Germany

We told you back in July of the troubles John and Ruth Chan were experiencing with the book table they and Campus Crusade for Christ set up each week on the University campus.  We now hear that the outcome of the meeting to be held in September will determine whether or not the book table ministry will be allowed to continue when the new term begins in October. This is a dark cloud indeed, so please keep praying that God’s purpose will prevail in this matter.

Kenya

We have asked you several times already this year to pray for rain to come to Kenya.  Many areas are still waiting – one of those being the Rift Valley, where much of last year’s conflicts took place.  Andy DesRoches tells us that many Kenyans think God is punishing them for the blood that was spilt during that time and are praying that He will forgive them, and show His mercy by sending rain.  Seeds cannot grow without water and if seeds don’t grow there will be no harvest.  Please continue to pray for rain to fall in abundance in the places where it is needed the most.

National Field Staff

Just because they may be somewhat familiar, it is often easier for us to identify more with the Global Field Staff sent out from Canada, rather than with the National Field Staff who work with CBM in their countries of origin.  However, these faithful and conscientious workers are an essential part of many of our ministries.  Please pray for our National Field Staff in Angola, Bolivia, Czech Republic, Kenya, India and Rwanda, and if you’re looking for someone to support, why not choose one of our hard working Nationals?

From Youth Affected by War to Advocates of Peace: Rediscovering Youth Strength and Resilience

The Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University is

hosting a talk in support of the Child Solider Initiative featuring guest speakers: Grace Akallo from Uganda; Ishmael Beah from Sierra Leone; and John Kon Kelei from Sudan. The presentation will take place on August 27th from 7-9pm at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. For details on how to purchase tickets, see the poster on the bulletin board in the foyer.

Read-A-Thon

We have an exciting summer reading program until September 27th. We would like for you to join in the fun. Have you noticed the reading chart by the Library? We now have over 54 names on it. Folks from age 3 to 87 are getting into the fun of reading books and enjoying videos from the Library. There is a great selection available so why not visit the library, pick up some books or a video and join in the excitement? There are a variety of prizes such as gift cards from department stores, restaurants, grocery stores, and a variety of other items for children and adults to select from. If you read the New Testament in any version, it is the same as reading 3 books in the library. If you read the Old Testament in any version, it is the same as reading 10 books in the library.  If, for some reason your name is not on the poster please talk to one of the librarians.

Computer Classes

We are offering beginner and intermediate

classes in the newly operational computer lab for all who wish to improve their computer skills.  The beginner classes will take place on Tuesday, August 18 (part 1) and Thursday, August 20 (part 2) from 2 - 3.30 pm

The intermediate classes will take place on Tuesday, August 18 (part 1) and Thursday, August 20 (part 2) from 6.30 - 8 pm. If these times are not suitable please call Alex @ 440-0989 for an individual appointment. For more details please see Alex or Kevin.

Mark Your Calendars

The annual Church Family Retreat will take place September 18, 19, & 20 at Camp Mush-a-Mush. Stay tuned for more details.

Contratulations

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The Friday evening performance marked the end of Arts Camp 2009. Family and friends of the 13 participants gathered in the gym to enjoy the show! A special thank you to all the volunteers who made this week’s camp a success.
