May Calendar

The May calendar of events is available for pick up in the foyer.

 Prayer Link

Springforth, the largest annual youth conference in Atlantic Canada, will be held this Friday and Saturday in Moncton. Offering three simultaneous tracks (Middle School; Senior High, and Leaders), an estimated 2000 attendees are expected. Please pray not only for safety of travel but also that God’s heart will connect with the hearts of everyone that attends. Approximately 20 teens from our church will be going to this event.

Summer Ministry Coordinators Jobs

The CE Committee will hear within a couple of weeks whether we will receive government grants. Because we have agreed to an open competition, particularly with visible minorities and those with disabilities, we will advertise in a variety of ways. With this in mind, we are re-opening the job postings for 3 summer ministry coordinators positions with hopes that we will be awarded grants. The jobs are all post- secondary education positions. We will also consider persons who are completing Grade 12 who are going on to post-secondary education this fall. However, the proposed start date would be May 20 and Grade 12 candidates would need to be willing to work part-time until school was finished. Please contact church office for further info and submit resumes to church office

Commissioning Service Coming up Soon

On May 10th, three men who were or still are members of our church - Lic. Kevin Haggarty, (our Youth Pastor and son of members Ian and Jeanette Haggarty) Borden Scott (son of members Walter and Susan Scott) and Christopher Drew (son of former members Ken and Sandra Drew and grandson of member Annie Pierce) will graduate from Acadia Divinity College. On May 8th at 7:30pm there will be a special Commissioning service at Wolfville Baptist Church to which we are all invited. (Unfortunately Kevin will not be present as he is taking about 20 of our teens to a special youth conference in Moncton.)

Spring Halifax Region United Baptist Association Meeting Report

What a pleasure to be the Association Representative for our church!! So much is going on!!! It's hard to keep up with all of it! (What a fabulous thing to have to complain about!!!) Here is a quick over view...

We were hosted by Faith Baptist in Sackville on April 25th... thanks to them for being so well organized and prepared!

Right off the top we were told about the 400th Anniversary of our Baptist beginnings. The rest of the day took us through regular business meeting format and committee reports but with historical vignettes (so well done!!) interspersed between them. These vignettes taught us more and more about our Baptist history... what an honor to be learning this!! William Brackney led us through these vignettes. We were even treated to the chance to "touch and remember" the originating heritage of our Baptist history in the form of a brick from that long ago "Bake House in Amsterdam" (where some the founding Baptists were safely housed and the official Baptist work formed) while sadly many others died in prison for their beliefs! We can easily forget this part of our history as we live in a culture where this seems impossible. We were invited to check out William Brackney's (the interim Pastor at Faith, and Prof. of Christian Theology and Ethics at Acadia University and Acadia Divinity College) new book..."A Capsule History of Baptist Principles"... it is very well laid out... an easy read... I recommend it highly.

There were many moments of humble pride as member after member, who have history in the roots of our Bedford Baptist (folks we like to call "our own"), served during this meeting and others who were acknowledged during it. First, was "Our" Marlene Knowles, moderator of our Association, who opened this meeting in prayer and led us on through the day Then, in closing, "Our" Sandra Irving stepped forward to relieve Marlene of her duties as the new Moderator! (Congratulations Sandra... and thank you for offering to serve in this way!) We heard of the calling of "Our" Christopher Drew as the Associate Pastor at West End. "Our" Ida (Armstrong Whitehouse, Council member/Co chair of Hospital Chaplaincy) introduced Gerald Burke who reported on what is happening in our hospitals with the continual theme of "Be not afraid, I am with you to the ends of the earth"; a promise that even sitting in our seats that day... gave us comfort as he told us just a few stories of the kind of ministering he/they do on our behalf for those in need in our hospitals. Then "Our" Winston Hendsbee were presented with a certificate of appreciation for his years of service to Hospital Ministry. This was followed by "Our" Nelson (Metcalfe) who presented New License to Minister to "Our" Miriam MacDonald, new Lay License to Minister to "Our" Kathy Cochrane, renewals of License to Minister to "Our" Christopher Drew and "Our" Kevin Haggarty and renewal to Lay License to Minister to "Our" Winston Hendsbee!

"Our" Frank Guinta prayed for convention concerns as well! Please keep in your prayers eight churches in our region presently seeking Pastors, and for replacements for the wonderful NFLD ministry that has flourished under Melanie and Lawrence Peck's leadership. He has now answered the call to serve as Chaplain on the Police Force!

We heard a wonderful update on Bayside, and again our "home team" was beautifully represented by the BBC contingent that has been there the whole way through--all winter long this year!!! PowerPoint pictures of the evolving camp phases prominently featured "Our" Bernie Levy, "Our" Stephen Rand and many others of our membership... each of them there, seeing this commitment through! Please consider joining them at the NEW BAYSIDE OPEN HOUSE June 27th There will be a concert by the "LaPointes" at 6pm... open to all!!! The new camp is located at 1503 Ketch Harbor Rd. We were challenged to find one person in our congregation that has "a passion for camping" and to encourage them to get involved with preparing Bayside for this first camping season!!! Well, we have that one well covered a few times but that must mean there are more folks in our congregation who we are not aware of YET who have gifts to share in this ministry. Are you one of them???

We heard a further report of the ongoing consultation in regards to "Incorporation of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches". This is still an ongoing process... concerns were voiced... it seems this process is far from over just yet!

Upcoming meetings to be aware of:

There will be a presentation held in our church on Mental Illness Oct 17th. Question: are we really equipped to help persons with such illness in our churches?? Here's a chance to do better by them/us!

The fall Association meeting will be held on Oct 31 (details to follow in the early fall) Please consider attending with us. It was fabulous to have such a large contingent from our church present two weeks ago!

I have only briefly touched on the masses of information and wonderful work being done in our local Association. It causes me to pause... and pray for those doing the work... and those that are being called to further the work into the future for our Lord! Bless you all!

Respectfully submitted

Cheryl Hartlen
