Sunday Prayer Link

Please pray for Rev. Greg Jones, who serves as Director of Development for our Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches, as he launches a new three year Appeal for UIM entitled “Transforming Churches, Transforming Lives Appeal”. Please pray for safety as he travels to conduct a number of Appeal Launch seminars throughout our Convention over these next six weeks. Also, please pray for effectiveness as he works with pastors, churches and associations in raising the understanding of Biblical Stewardship as well as the importance of the ministry that we as churches share through the CABC.

Small Groups

Small groups will begin the evening of September 27! The following books will be studied:

“Life You Always Wanted” by John Ortberg;

“Images of the Spirit” by Dale and Sandy Larsen;

“Who Stole My Church” by Gordon MacDonald;

“Forgiveness – Breaking the Power of the Past” by Kay Arthur, David & BJ Lawson

 “Discussion on the Basic Questions of Faith!”

Facilitators will be announced in the coming weeks!

Reading Program –Only 2 Weeks Left

Over 220 books have been borrowed from our library since the “Summer Fun Reading Program” began! Over 66 folks have indicated that they have read books! ONE PROBLEM - the Library Committee needs to know how many you have read. Also, if you have not signed your name on one of the charts outside the Library, would you be so kind as to do so. (The list of prizes available is in library. For adults, prizes range from $5.00 - $25.00, many of which are gift certificates) Please see the list of prizes to ascertain  the number of books needed for various prizes.

Visitation Committee

The purpose of the Visiting Committee is “to show the love and compassion of Christ by having contact with those of our church family who are sick, shut-in, bereaved, or new to the church community to offer comfort and encouragement”. To aid us in fulfilling this role, it would be helpful if you would contact the Pastoral Staff or Miriam MacDonald, Coordinator of the Visiting Committee, (864-6208) if you know of someone we can be of assistance to in this way. This is particularly important if the person’s name has not been placed on the Sick and Shut-in List in the Sunday bulletin.

Visitation Committee

Our fall Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m. in the Heffler Room. It will be helpful and very much appreciated if you are able to attend this meeting, as we will be updating the Visitation List and the Visitation Committee list.

Seniors Fall Bus Trip

Our bus trip is scheduled for Friday, September 25. We are planning to have lunch at Old Orchard Inn. There will be a tour of the Botanical Gardens at Acadia University and our regular stop at Hennigar's. The bus will leave the church at 10:15 am. We expect to be back to the church around 5:00. A donation of $15 is suggested to help with the bus rental. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer.

Oasis Reflections 2009

The most exciting part of Convention for me was Reggie McNeal's ability to take "our role" in "God's Church" and simplify it to the most amazingly simple "chore"... I loved it when he said (I'm paraphrasing here) "what makes us think that we are the ones who should be responsible for leading people to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior... and we should do it by going out and bringing them in to "our churches"  NO... we are to go out and be servants to God's people... on His behalf... then stand back and pray for those people we have served... and watch God "show off" with what He can do in His people's hearts!  God is the one doing the blessing... not us... we are the ones called to serve!" His examples of such fundamental and simplistic "little things" we can do in our everyday lives was soooo refreshing... sooo inspiring!  Can't wait to get the DVD's and share them with anyone interested in seeing them! Another highlight that was how beautifully we all worked together in the business sessions... it was much more respectful and "listening" than I remember from the past years I attended

 A time and place that I experienced God's presence hard to say if it was the worship music or Reggie McNeal that was the most poignant... but a smaller example (because there were so many) would be the blessings of meeting and getting to really talk to others I didn't know prior... especially during meals and having folks who were not in harms way from "Bill" where they lived... who once they knew where I lived... offered up prayer support for all of us who were!

 Another was being on the same floor as Shant Manuel,.who was so funny when I met him in the lounge... because he was sure he had to be on the wrong floor... "surely they aren't putting men and women on the same floor?" LOL... Yes indeed!  I told him I thought that they were trusting we were all big enough people to behave by now! LOL  But this was the relaxed intro. into my asking if he was married to Ginny... which he is of course... and telling him how I knew her as a child... from Camp Peniel (outside of Yarmouth)... he immediately pulled out his cell... and called her and told her "I have someone here from your past"... it was fun for sure... but it was reassurance that God makes these kind of things happen for a reason.  Who shows up the next night but Ginny!  The night before that... Shant and I had a wonderful chat about how his call has led him... and I heard about his newest mission plan... to go back to India and teach so many

new Pastors!  I don't know where this might all lead in the years ahead... but I know without a doubt that there is a reason it all happened that way. At that time there was too much excitement in my heart for it to just stop right there!

 Not sure where this all fits... but I think the most pronounced "message" I got this year... was that we have to stop building "our church"... and get out there and live our Christian lives... serve God's people... and let God do His work without us messing it up with our ideas of how important numbers of attendees are... how many new families we brought into the church this year... that kind of thing... just get the word out... and trust that God will make the rest happen! Cheryl Hartlen

For me, Convention Oasis is a time of connecting with new ideas and having a time of being with friends I’ve made over the past 40 years. Each year my circle of new friends increases but the passing of old friends is bittersweet. It was touching to know that Rev. Nelson Metcalfe and Rev. Ted Britton (son-in-law of the Dawson’s, former members of Bedford Baptist ) were honoured by the Baptist Convention for their long time service in ordained ministry.

I appreciate the new format of Convention Assembly. I like the learning opportunities provided through a multitude of workshops. I went to a very humorous one on “Using Your Leadership Style in an Effective Manner”. I wished that you could have been with me to hear that presenter. I did take notes.

It did my heart good to see 14 people from our church attend this Baptist gathering of around a 1000 participants at Acadia University. As a Convention of over 500 churches in the Atlantic Provinces, we had opportunity to praise God and be spiritually challenged. I hope some of you will join us next year in Moncton. Rev. Ida
