Come join the Truong family to Watch "Journey from the Fall"

This Movie is based on the Exodus of the Vietnamese people. In 1980, BBC sponsored the Truong family and this movie will portray some of the ordeals they experienced in escaping Vietnam. .As part of Asian Heritage Month, and in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Vietnamese Association of Nova Scotia, we would like to invite you to a free screening of "Journey from the Fall" at Pier 21 on Sunday May 9th starting at 7pm. See http://www.pier21.ca/ for more information and trailer. Unlike previous movies about the Vietnam War, this movie was directed by a Vietnamese American and reveals the horrors of the re-education camps and the exodus of the "boat people", of which many refugees who were sponsored to Nova Scotia experienced.  The Truong family would love to have you join them in watching this movie.

Thank you very much for the lovely cards and In Memoriam gift we received following the death of my sister, Sandra Orr, in Niagara Falls. Lloyd and I appreciated the many prayers offered on our behalf as we travelled between Nova Scotia and Ontario. This has been a very sad time for us, yet we rejoice in the complete recovery of my brother following his extensive open heart surgery at the Heart Institute in Ottawa. The grace of God and your prayers and thoughtfulness have kept us going and we are grateful. Lynda and Lloyd Mitchell and Family.

HRM Baptist Association Spring Meeting Highlights

Highlights from Saturday, April 24, meeting at Stevens Road Baptist Church:

  • Our CABC Racism Working Group made a report. Established in 2001 with the mandate to hold Council and Assembly accountable to the following challenge: ... to devote the first decade of the 21st Century in addressing and raising awareness related to racism and racial justice. This working group is prepared to propose that an Ethnic Ministries Working Group/Department be created at the Convention level to, in part, propose policies, programs and ministries that will lead to the full participation and partnership of all ethnic communities in the life of our Convention, its Agencies and Boards, and in our Churches. (Details available at our church office.)
  • Our Association Licensing Committee, under the capable direction of our Pastor Emeritus, Nelson Metcalfe, commended 20 individuals for a License to Minister, including our own Kathy Cochrane, Heather Cox, Kevin Haggarty, and Miriam MacDonald, along with Borden Scott and Christopher Drew.
  • Our own Sandra Irving completed her term of service as Moderator, and now continues to serve as Past-Moderator, chairing the Nominating Committee.

· The current status of our Convention incorporation was delivered, with it being noted that each church will need to examine the documents and then vote as to become a member of the new Convention. There will be no "grand-fathering" of any churches.

Complete reports may be obtained at our church office. Pastor Bob

Incorporation of the Canadian Atlantic Baptist Convention

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, the Halifax Region United Baptist Association is hosting a morning meeting from 8: 30 am to 12:00 pm at Bedford Baptist Church to discuss the third draft of the General Operating Bylaw. We will be discussing the rights, responsibilities and expectations of members in the new Convention and the questions that remain to be answered regarding local church autonomy and the impact all these changes will have on all of us. Pastors, deacons, moderators, church clerks, church members, as well as Association council members should attend this half day workshop. Delegates to Oasis in August should find it helpful in increasing their understanding of the document so that more informed decisions can be made when the General Operating Bylaw comes to a vote. Please plan to attend this very important meeting.

Solidarity Sunday - Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9th

Every Mother’s Day, Canadian Baptists across the country come together for a very special reason: Solidarity Sunday. This is a symbolic event intended for us to stand in unity with our brothers and sisters around the world.  This year we are asking your church to join us in standing alongside our neighbours in Rwanda. Through Solidarity Sunday, you can bring hope and healing to vulnerable families who struggle with such issues as poverty, HIV/AIDS and the legacy of the genocide.  You can also help support and train the dedicated pastors who must minister to families amidst these challenging circumstances. CBM offering envelopes will be available next Sunday
